One of the things that people have is a misunderstanding, unfortunately, about what a true prophet is, and what a false prophet is. And of course in the old testament what defined a false prophet, if you read the scriptures in Deuteronomy 13 and 18, it was talking about those that led people away from the lord, to go after other gods. It wasn’t so much based on whether their words were accurate or were false. Many true prophets were stoned falsely, because the people did not correctly interpret their prophecies. And so that’s what happens today. There are there are people that will label somebody as a false prophet. And really, it’s because they don’t discern the word of the lord. Or they haven’t allowed those prophecies to breathe, or to come to pass. But one of the things that we can say is this. When it comes to a true prophet, you’ve got to look at their fruit. Jesus said, you know them by their fruit. Look at their track record. What have they been saying that has come to pass. What is it about their character you know. Who are they connected to. Those are very important principles, when it comes to defining what a true prophet is, and a false prophet. It’s not so much based on, you know, what they said. Even though that is important. Because, let me just say this. Jesus was the greatest prophet that ever walked the earth. But did you ever notice, that they never said, who is this man that speaks with such great incredible words, that come to pass. No. They said, who’s this man that speaks with authority. When a true prophet speaks, heaven will back up their words, and you will feel god on what they say.
Deuteronomy 13:1 — If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” 3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere.
Deuteronomy 18:17 – The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” 21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.
Matthew 7:15–20 — “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
