RECOGNIZING FALSE PROPHETS AND TEACHERS — AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT
Jun 15, 2022
Wanda Alger
0:01–0:24 — in today’s video i’m going to do a teaching on recognizing false prophets false teachers false messengers counterfeit messages at a time when we’re trying to figure out who do we follow what do we trust we need to have some ground rules
3:17–3:47 — i pulled from acts 16 the story of the apostle paul who called out the demon behind the slave girl that was following him throughout the public square she was prophesying a true word but she was inspired by a demonic spirit and so in acts 16:18 says she kept doing this for many days and paul having become greatly annoyed turned and said to the spirit i command you in the name of jesus to come out of her and it came out that very hour
5:36–6:29 — this scripture passage in acts 16 that i thought was worth noting that one of the reasons that paul called out this demonic spirit was because the purpose of the enemy was to infiltrate the church i mean this slave girl was prophesying true words but it was a demonic spirit and derek prince’s whole point which i totally concur with is this is how the enemy gets a foothold in the christian community it’s not by uh espousing false prophecies no it’s true words but from a wrong spirit and so uh this this was a reminder this is why we have to be on guard and we have to know how to recognize the spirit behind the messenger the spirit behind the message and that was really the the main message that i wanted to give in in that word was to recognize those spiritual handlers behind the scenes
6:35–6:47 — so in this teaching that i want to do and it’s just going to be kind of a broad brush brush stroke here from the old testament new testament looking at false teachers false prophets false messages and what to do about them what to look for and then how do we respond
8:00–9:21 — i want to look at first john 2:27 because this mentions the word counterfeit it says as for you the anointing you received from him remains in you and you don’t need anyone to teach you but as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real and not counterfeit just as it has taught you remain in him so here the word counterfeit is applied not to a person but to the anointing that’s very interesting those who have surrendered to christ and are filled with the holy spirit there is an anointing of the spirit of truth that resides within us and this is only available to believers in christ who have invited that into their lives there is an anointing and that holy spirit is what teaches us now there’s a counterfeit one where there it’s not an anointing it’s not the spirit of christ okay uh but it’s that anointing that’s counterfeit and it’s gonna be known because it’s gonna be scripturally accurate it’s gonna bear weight in the spirit it’s going to produce the works of jesus i mean there’s there’s a number of characteristics that the anointing of christ is going to manifest and non-believers don’t have this and the admonition here is it can only be found in christ remain in him
10:42–11:20 — so let’s just look at the word, false. And I found some interesting passages that mention false. One of them is in psalm 27 verse 12. And the psalmist here says, give me not up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. So this is talking about a false witness, that is known because, it breathes out violence. So this would be telling for us, is that the spirit behind someone, who is actually a false witness, is not true. That there’s going to be this attitude of violence, vengeance, punishment, death, that should alert us, pay attention.
12:12 — those who constantly accuse point fingers it’s the spirit behind it that should alert us to a false witness
12:17–13:03 — another uh reference to false is in proverbs 11:1 it talks about a false balance which is an abomination to the lord but a just wait is his delight well that’s talking about an unjust scale a manipulated truth an unfair advantage well this is what the whole 2020 election has been about has it not you know 2 000 mules exposed that this false balance a changing of the standards that shows bias hypocritical okay that’s a false balance and it says it’s an abomination to the lord that should that should kind of alert us that we shouldn’t just gloss over this because it’s very important to him
13:03–13:34 — because it’s very important to him so let’s look now at false prophets oh we love talking about false prophets don’t we and i’ve been amazed to see the comments that are thrown out you know even on my youtube channel of people calling a false prophet out just because they got a prophecy wrong well i’m going to just share a few passages from old testament and new testament it’s going to show that a false prophet according to scripture is known by the state of their heart and the source of their intel much more than the accuracy of their prophecies
13:40–13:58 — Тhe slave girl, she was motivated by a demonic spirit. But she gave a true prophecy. Balaam in the old testament was a false prophet, but he spoke some true words. so a false prophet or teacher is not going to be known just by the accuracy of what they prophesy or teach. it has to do with the state of their heart.
13:58–15:12 — One of the chapters that speaks a lot to this is jeremiah 23. a few of the verses starting with 13 and 14. This is the lord speaking to jeremiah and the prophets of samaria. i saw an unsavory thing they prophesied by baal, and led my people israel astray. But in the prophets of jerusalem, i have seen a horrible thing. They commit adultery and walk in lies. They strengthen the hands of evildoers. So that no one turns from his evil. Now, this is overall what we’re going to see in these passages. These false prophets they prophesy by baal, by satan, to lead people astray from God. That is the intent of a false prophet, is to lead people away from God. Away from his truth. They commit adultery and walk in lies. Many times they are known for their immoral character or conduct. Because that’s what they give themselves to. When they walk in that kind of rebellion against the lord, they want to strengthen the hands of the evil doers. That is you know the core of a false prophet, it’s very intentional.
15:12–16:27 — same thing verse 16 and 17 of the same chapter. he says, do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the lord. They say continually to those who despise the word of the lord, it shall be well with you. And to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, no disaster will come upon you. Now, notice here. They speak visions of their own minds. It’s made up. It’s actually a word, it starts as a work of the flesh. And this is something that derek prince, i noticed in his teaching, that he refers to. And it’s right on that in in scripture. Witchcraft is most of the time described as works of the flesh. I mean this should be a wake-up call. That when we give into our flesh repeatedly, we are opening the door to demonic spirits. So in this passage, speaking visions of their own minds, not from the lord. They despise the word of the lord. So this this is again, the intention of a false prophet. They despise the word of the lord. They don’t want anyone to listen to what god is saying. Especially if the lord is warning about something. False prophets don’t want you… no, no, everything’s fine, go to sleep, go to sleep.
16:45–17:29 — Okay, going on verse 26 and 27. How long shall there be lies in the hearts of the prophets, who prophesy lies, and who prophesied the deceit of their own heart. Who think to make my people forget my name, by their dreams that they tell one another. Even as their fathers forgot my name for baal. Okay. Again they are purposely trying to make people forget about God. They prophesy the deceit of their own heart. See this is what happens. It may even start out as a work of the flesh, to draw attention to oneself. It will open the door to a demonic spirit of deception. And then, that’s what they’re prophesying from. It’s that deception. That’s what happened to balaam, speaking from the deceit of his own heart, to draw people away from God.
17:35–18:39 — Нext passage is in Еzekiel 13:9. Мy hand will be against the prophets who see false visions, and who give lying divinations. Тhey shall not be in the council of My people. Nor be enrolled in the register of the house of israel. False visions — that means empty, vain, untrue, made up. They’re false. they’re not real. and who give lying divinations. So this is not just lying out of the flesh, like twisting the truth, a half-truth. No. This this is witchcraft. It is purposeful and intentional, to lead people astray. It’s coming from the dark side. And i want to say. You know as we’re kind of building a case here, notice this is different than talking about someone who’s speaking simply out of immaturity. Or they don’t know how to interpret a word, that the lord gave them. That they get something wrong. That’s totally different, than purposely lying, and drawing from a source, that is not God.
Part 2 of 2 — Recognizing False Prophets — teaching by Wanda Alger:

18:39–19:20 — Мatthew 7:15. Here’s a new testament passage. He said, Jesus himself says, beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You’ll recognize them by their fruits. So again, jesus here is saying, this is VERY INTENTIONAL. They are camouflaging themselves to fit in. They know it. Because they want to appear a certain way. But inside, no, they got different motives. This is exactly what the slave girl was doing. She appeared as this, you know, girl that was prophesying true things. No. It was camouflaged. Because it was a demonic spirit. And i want to call attention. It says, you will recognize them by their fruits.
19:33–19:56 — But i do want to add a word of caution. Because even the pharisees could claim to have fruits. You know, works of righteousness. But they’re dead. There are some within the Body of Christ, and i mean, this has been a pattern. We’ve seen it. You know, even in past decades, with fallen leaders, who have produced good works. Feeding the poor, helping the weak. You know, whatever kinds of programs. But inwardly, their hearts are far from the Lord.
19:56–20:15 — So i simply wanted to bring that up. Because we can’t just lump everything into this. Well just look at the fruit. Well, you do have to test the fruit, you have to weigh that, as to, okay, is this really the fruit of a sanctified heart. One that really knows God. That’s led by the spirit of god. Or is that just empty works.
20:22–21:34 — Аnd again, this is referring to people who know that they are leading people astray. Іt’s NOT referring to prophets who are simply IMMATURE. There’s some immature prophets who don’t know how to rightly interpret things. They’re shallow in their faith. They might be young, compromised in their faith. And this is this isn’t just with prophets. It’s with any teacher, prophet, leader, in the body of christ. They just might not have a sound doctrine, a solid biblical foundation, that’s complete. There’s a lot of reasons why someone might say something that’s not true. And so I share this, because WE CAN’T lump everyone into being… especially with a prophet, if they prophesy something WRONG, that they’re a FALSE PROPHET. There’s NO SCRIPTURAL FOUNDATION FOR THAT. Because that’s not what makes a prophet specifically false. It’s the state of their heart. The intention and their purpose. If they have a heart after God. You know, they might make a wrong call. They might interpret something wrong. And obviously, the heart will be seen by how they steward that, how they move forward.
22:18–23:19 — So the question is then, what are we supposed to judge? Because, again, i’ve seen some comments, we’re supposed to judge the prophets. Don’t see that. Some of these scriptures that i do see. One is in first corinthians 14:29. And this is in the passage, where it’s talking about the gifts of the spirit, in the operation, in the church. And it says, let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. So there. The admonition is, we’re supposed to weigh what is said. The message. First, IT DOESN’T SAY — JUDGE THE PROPHET. Weigh what is said. What the message and the implication here, is that, actually the PROPHETS SHOULD WEIGH ONE ANOTHER. Which i think is very healthy. And i think we need to have more of a conferring together. A round table of prophets, that we confer together. Because, we recognize, we each have a part of the of the bigger picture. And we can adjust and help one another. So that we are speaking a right word to the body of christ. Weigh what is said.
23:25–23:48 — First john 4:1 says. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. Well this is exactly what paul did with the slave girl. He tested the spirit. He was not rebuking her. He was rebuking the spirit behind her. And she got set free. So this is what we’re supposed to do.
23:48 -24:01 — so this is what we’re supposed to do. now i have a whole other two-part video series, on this gift of discerning of spirits. Where i unpack this. So i’ll put those links below. because it’s either human spirit, holy spirit, or a demonic spirit. those are pretty much the options.
24:16–24:32 — Those are the three options that we have. And so this is what john is saying. Test the spirit, because sometimes it might not be the holy spirit that has inspired this word. It might not be a demonic spirit. Sometimes it’s just the human spirit. It’s someone speaking on their own.
25:54–26:39 — Another fallacy, that is often mentioned, maybe in jest. But i feel like i need to address it. Is that the old testament prophets, who were found to be false, were stoned to death. Obviously, at that time, before pentecost, nobody had holy spirit within them, with which to judge. Did that come from God or not. The prophets in the old testament — the Spirit of God literally came on them, and they spoke for God. Well, because no one even had the ability to discern that, the only way that God could teach His people to listen, was He had to publicly judge that prophet — if they were false. By stoning them. On this side of the cross, and on this side of pentecost, we all now have the holy spirit within us, and the holy spirit wants us to discern together.
28:54–29:47 — Іt’s like, anymore, because everything and everyone is being questioned, i don’t know who the prophets to believe anymore. І’m not even sure that prophecy works. When 1 Thessalonians 5:19. It says, do not quench the spirit, do not despise prophecies, but test everything, and hold fast what is good. Yeah, we’re all frustrated. You know, with the mixed messages, and the incomplete picture. But we have to hold fast to what is good, what has been verified, what has been fulfilled. And not get off course, just because we’ve made some mistakes along the way. Because some people have missed it. Let’s not despise prophecy. But let’s continually pray that the Lord would refine us, sanctify us, teach us how to walk in this. In a way that’s going to continually grow and expand the work of this Spirit, here in the Earth.
47:06–47:19 — We need to continue to expose the false messages. You know, to weigh the message, what is said. To test the spirit. But let’s withhold judgment on the person, until it’s all clear. Be careful of that.
Acts 16:18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly [a]annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.
1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you [a]will abide in Him.
Psalm 27:12 Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence.
Proverbs 11:1 Dishonest[a] scales are an abomination to the Lord, But a [b]just weight is His delight.
Jeremiah 23:13–14 “And I have seen [a]folly in the prophets of Samaria: They prophesied by Baal And caused My people Israel to err. Also I have seen a horrible thing in the prophets of Jerusalem: They commit adultery and walk in lies; They also strengthen the hands of evildoers, So that no one turns back from his wickedness. All of them are like Sodom to Me, And her inhabitants like Gomorrah.
Jeremiah 23:16–17 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They make you worthless; They speak a vision of their own heart, Not from the mouth of the Lord. They continually say to those who despise Me, ‘The Lord has said, “You shall have peace” ’; And to everyone who walks according to the [a]dictates of his own heart, they say, ‘No evil shall come upon you.’ ”
Jeremiah 23:26–27 How long will this be in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies? Indeed they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart, who try to make My people forget My name by their dreams which everyone tells his neighbor, as their fathers forgot My name for Baal.
Ezekiel 13:9 “My hand will be against the prophets who envision futility and who divine lies; they shall not be in the assembly of My people, nor be written in the record of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter into the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the Lord God.
Matthew 7:15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
1 Corinthians 14:29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.
1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 Thessalonians 5:19–21 — Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.
